The Top 3 Places to Hike in Dallas

If you live in Dallas, you’ll know we’re not known for our extravagant hiking spots, but we do have a few hidden gems! In this list, you’ll find my top 3 places to hike in Dallas, why I love them, and what you should expect if you decide to take a hike!

3. White Rock Lake

Cost: Free
8300 Garland Rd., Dallas, TX 75201

Not only is Dallas not known for hiking, but we’re also not known for having large bodies of water!

Why I Love to Hike at White Rock Lake:

I’m originally from Florida, so anytime I get a chance to be next to a larger body of water, I’m in heaven.

What to Expect on Your Trip:

Parking – There is usually plenty of parking around the 9.5-mile trail; however, the park does tend to get busy on the weekends and evenings.

Park Amenities – White Rock lake has a ton of amenities, including boat ramps, picnic areas, dog park, and playgrounds.

2. Arbor Hills Preserve

Cost: Free
6701 W. Parker Rd, Plano, TX 75093

Nested near neighborhoods in Plano, Arbor Hills Preserves offers both pavement and off-pavement trails.

Why I love to Hike at Arbor Hills Preserve:

My husband and I live in The Colony, so Arbor Hills Preserve is only about 15 minutes away from us and provides a very scenic and relaxing hike. You can also take your dogs, but some of the trails do not have shade, so be wary of your pups overheating during the Texas summer heat.

What to Expect on Your Trip:

Parking – Arbor Hills Preserve provides a paved parking lot with ample parking.

Amenities – At the pavement trailhead, you will find public restrooms, water fountains, a covered picnic area, and a play area for kids. Halfway through the paved trail, you will find another public restroom and covered picnic area.

2. Cedar Ridge Preserve

Cost: Suggested $3 donation
7171 Mountain Creek Pkwy, Dallas, TX 75249

It’s no Mount Rainier, but Cedar Ridge Preserve offers the best elevation you can get in Dallas.

Why I Love to Hike at Cedar Ridge Preserve:

I love Cedar Ridge Preserve as I feel like it gives you a somewhat “real hiking” experience in flat Dallas. I’m not in pristine cardio shape, so I’m also guaranteed to get a great work-out whenever I go.

What to Expect on Your Trip:

Parking – Cedar Ridge Preserve features a gravel parking lot, but you can also park in the grass near the entrance. Parking is free, but it can get jam-packed on a beautiful day. I recommend planning a trip in the morning.

Park Amenities – At the trailhead, you will find public restrooms, a water fountain, and picnic tables. On the trail, you will find an occasional bench. Note: There is no water on the trail, so please plan accordingly on a hot Texas day.
